And All Was Calm, And All Was Beautiful

"Stop that," his voice was rather stern, almost commanding, which only made Jay laugh a little harder about the situation.

"Stop what?" He taunted in return, trying to stop the childish giggles that escaped him as he pushed down a smile.

"Stop hitting me with your fucking pencil," Alex cried in exasperation, grabbing Jay's wrist, making the other bust out laughing.

Senior year, lunch. Graduation was just around the corner, which for both of them meant twice the amount of slacking off they usually did. Well, at least for Jay. Alex always had to be busying himself with something, a trait that, despite getting in the way of Jay's many humorous misadventures, he had to admire.

"Jay, stop hitting Alex with the pencil," Jessica piped up.

"But it's funny!" Jay protested.

"... It is funny," she conceded before going back to reading a book. Jay wasn't too sure what the book was about and despite having asked before he wasn't too sure he understood regardless. It was something sci-fi, he understood nothing about science much less the fiction attached to it.

Jessica was another person he couldn't help but admire. She was pretty smart, she seemed like she was honestly a bit more put together than Alex, which, to Jay, was pretty impressive. She also had one of the best senses of humor in his eyes. They had met back in freshman year when they got partnered together for an English project and they became pretty inseparable since.

“Don’t agree with him!” Alex argued, letting go of Jay’s wrist. He huffed softly as there was a moment of calm at the table, taking a bite of the sandwich he packed himself for lunch. Jay quickly snagged a chip from his lunch, which Alex didn’t bother complaining about.

This peace only lasted for mere seconds, however, as Jay once again began gently slapped the pencil against Alex’s shoulder.

“Will you stop it?” Alex barked, making Jay laugh once again.

“But it’s funny pissing you off!” Jay argued, which made Alex roll his eyes.

“It is funny pissing you off,” Jessica agreed absentmindedly, something catching her eye long enough to set down the book she was reading.

“Will you stop agreeing with him?”

“Nah, it’s funnier that way.” It was clear her focus was still on something else, and so Jay followed her gaze.

Well, it turned out to be more a “someone” Jessica had her focus on. Jay wasn’t all too sure who the girl Jessica’s focus had gone to was. He wasn’t a total social butterfly. He could hold a conversation, sure, but he didn’t really care to form any friendships beyond what he already had.

“Dude, stop staring at her,” Alex finally commented, which made Jay jump slightly,

“I wasn’t staring,” he argued.

“Yeah you were.” Jessica was back to reading her book, which successfully made Jay sink into his seat.

“Tch- Ratting me out like that.”

At that moment the bell rang, leading to Alex tossing the rest of the bag of chips to Jay, who happily began munching on them as he stood up. Jessica slid a bookmark Jay was pretty sure was one you’d get at the Scholastic Book Fair between the pages of her novel and stood up.

“I’ll see you guys after class yeah?” She said, waving before walking away.

“Well, let’s hurry up, don’t want Mr. Leibovitz to lose his shit over us being late again,” Alex said before taking Jay by the forearm and walking to class with him, borderline dragging the other along.
