Night Light

Cyril was woken up by the sharp glare of the bedroom lights flickering on, a soft groan escaping him as it interrupted his partially relaxing rest. At least, as relaxing as someone like him could get. He blinked away the pain, slowly sitting and rubbing his eyes, noting that the windows with their thin curtains were drawn with no light trickling through the fabric, alerting him it was still night. Elijah was by the wall, clinging to it, his hand still clasped over the light switch, his chest rapidly rising and falling as he tried to catch his breath, tears threatening to spill from his eyes.

Cyril paused to think of what to say before looking at the wall. “Your night light fell out,” he mumbled quietly, looking back at Elijah, who just responded with a nod. He watched Cyril plug the small, moon shaped light back into the outlet on the wall. His hand slowly slid off the light switch, leaving the light on for the time being before he crept towards the bed, carefully sitting on it next to Cyril. His body only relaxed as he felt the man’s arms wrap around him, resting his head on the other’s shoulder as he heard Cyril’s gruff voice gently whisper “You’re safe.”

He gently sighed as he felt Cyril’s massage his scalp, a smile slowly creeping back on his face. He slowly pulled away, getting up to turn off the light before stopping, Cyril’s hands on his waist keeping him from moving.

“I was gonna-”

“I’ll go turn off the light.”

He hesitated before a gentle smile made its way to his lips, laughing at the other. “Why ‘course, sir. Go right ahead.”

He melted, feeling Cyril’s lips gently graze his forehead, the man’s rough hands so nimbly tucking him into the sheets before he got up, turning off the overhead light. He stared at Cyril as he made his way back to the bed, the gentle glow of the nightlight illuminating his eyes, giving him an almost uncanny look if Elijah hadn’t grown so fond of the reflective cat eyed look. He quickly wrapped his arms around Cyril’s torso as he began to lay down, a gentle peck against his lips.

“My hero,” Elijah quietly teased.

“Mm, just doing my job.”
